Frequently asked questions
Is the preliminary search opinion really free?
Yes. A SologoTM advisor reviews the information you provide and sends an initial search opinion within 2 business days. No card is required and there is no obligation to file.
What is the paid Comprehensive Trademark Risk Report?
If your case needs deeper review, your advisor may recommend a Comprehensive Trademark Risk Report prepared by a local Japanese attorney. It costs US$150 and is billed separately. You decide whether to order it.
How much does it cost to register a trademark in Japan?
For the first class, US$500 is paid before filing and US$500 is due only after the JPO accepts the application, for a successful-registration total of US$1,000. Each additional class is US$450 at filing and US$500 after acceptance, for a total of US$950.
Why is the Japan fee paid in two stages?
Japan charges an application-stage fee and a registration-stage fee. The second SologoTM payment is requested only if the application is accepted and the registration fee becomes due.
Are official fees included, or will I pay them separately?
Both stage prices include their standard official fees: the filing fee is included in the application-stage price, and the registration fee is included in the post-acceptance price. No additional standard official fee is charged. Optional or non-standard services are quoted before work begins.
Do overseas applicants need a representative in Japan?
Yes. Applicants who are not resident or domiciled in Japan generally need a representative in Japan for procedures before the JPO. Our local agency coordinates the filing and correspondence.
What information do I need to provide?
We need the applicant name and address, the trademark, and a description of the goods or services. If the mark includes a logo or stylized lettering, upload a clear image. We confirm any additional document requirement before filing.
Can I file a word mark and a logo together?
You can file a combined mark, but protection applies to that combined form. If the word and logo need independent protection, separate applications may be worth considering.
How are goods and services classified in Japan?
Japan uses the Nice Classification. We review your business description, recommend relevant classes and prepare the standard Japanese filing wording before you approve the application.
How long does Japan trademark registration take?
The JPO Status Report 2026 records an average of 7.8 months from application to registration for the period it measured. Individual cases can take longer because of objections, amendments or third-party action.
What happens after the JPO accepts the application?
We notify you and request the registration-stage payment. The local representative then pays the registration fee and completes the registration formalities.
How long does a Japan trademark registration last?
A Japan trademark registration lasts 10 years from registration and can be renewed for further 10-year periods.
What if the JPO raises an objection?
Standard filing and routine status updates are included. A substantive office-action response, appeal, opposition or other contested work is outside the standard scope and is quoted in writing before work starts.
What if the initial review raises concerns about my mark?
We explain the initial concerns and can discuss naming or design changes before choosing what to file. Any further review or design work is scoped and quoted separately; a changed mark may need a new search.
